That states-visited meme

I have actually visited all of the continental United States, at least superficially, because my family would take camping vacations in the summer and summer trips from Texas to Connecticutt in connection with my father's job. At one point, we had visited all the continental states except North and South Dakota--and if you start in Texas, North Dakota is not on the way to anywhere. So we took a trip that made a big swing through North and South Dakota and Montana. We actually found more interesting things on that trip than we'd expected.

I've noted states with some mention of what memories I have.

I believe I have now been to all 50, for similar reasons. My parents used to take us on long driving vacations to visit family and see great places in the United States. That covered most of the lower-48 other than a lot of New England. Then I moved to Boston, and we covered that area going hiking and skiing. I went camping in Alaska with hubby (when we were just friends) in July of 1998. So when we were looking for someplace to take a somewhat extreme honeymoon, I pushed for Hawaii to fill in the last gap.

It'd be interesting to sit down and figure out how many states I have a real memory of.

South Dakota rocks, especially the western part around Rapid City and the Black Hills.

I was there 10 years ago and still have very strong memories of the couple of days we spent in the area.

Particularly the visit to the cemetary at Wounded Knee. Eeriest place I've ever visited in my life.

I'd love to go and spend some more time there, and see some more of what the area has to offer.

In a reply to Karen's post (and a subsequent amendment), I could remember 7 states, plus Washington DC, as well as three more that I've essentially only seen from an airport or two (in fact I've been to California at least 14 times(!), in total for maybe 48 hours, but only inside airports).

In Australia, I've only been in the eastern states (4 states + the ACT) - I haven't been much further west than Broken Hill (so I've been far enough west to be in South Australia's timezone but not actually in the state). Within the eastern states, I've covered quite a lot of the area (except Queensland, which I've really only seen near-coastal regions).

Of course, Qld+NSW+Vic+Tas+ACT covers almost 40% of the area of the country (the land area of those states is a tad over 40% of the land area of the continental US), and about 80% of the population, so it's not quite so bad (Sydney and Melbourne alone would be close to 40% of the population).
