Zero Tolerance
One of Lori's rant-button topics is the folly of zero-tolerance rules in schools. Short form: she believes that it's not right to ignore the issues of intent and child development in order to apply a one-size-fits-all set of rules.

It turns out that the American Psychological Association agrees with her on this.

How nice to know that they've caught up with me on this one ;-)

I would totally have been kicked out of school if they'd had that back when. My heinous crime? Finally snapping, and threatening a girl who had been bullying me steadily (with the help of her friends) from the third through the eigth grade.

The actual outcome? They told her and her clique to leave me alone... and they did. Sort of. For a few years. Started up again in high school but this time I went to my teacher and asked her to keep her away from me, and she stopped bugging me in class and was tolerable (well avoidable) outside of class.
