Cover retcon

"Cover retcon" is my proposed term for the experience of discovering that a song one had long associated with artist A was actually A's cover of a song first performed by another artist B. Previous examples of this in my life: hearing Louis Armstrong perform "Just a Gigolo" instead of David Lee Roth; hearing Talking Heads perform "Memories Can't Wait" instead of Living Colour.

The reason I mention this: WYEP just played "Tainted Love", made famous by Soft Cell--as performed in the 60s by Gloria Jones.

I tried to find a link to this on the iTunes Music Store, but failed. But I found about 100 other covers of "Tainted Love", including a reggae version, a fairly nice jazz version, and a tribute to the Pussycat Dolls' 2005 cover of the 80s' cover, yielding at least 3 levels of indirection.
